The three truths

This poem was inspired by the conversation between Krista Tippett and Sarah Kay, a poet and spoken word artist. You can find this conversation here at the On Being web site — this is the best program on the air, if you ask me. (By the way, I always recommend the unedited versions of the podcasts).

The three truths I know for sure are:
One — I had peanut butter toast for breakfast today
And I embellished it with banana slices
(That felt creative)
Two — that boy I went to nursery school with,
The one that used to eat his boogers at nap time?
One summer he drowned
Three — if I sit still and listen
If I sit long enough to let the silence fill me
You are as close as my next breath

    1. Thank you, Natalie Sarah Kay is a young voice — she is 23, I think. And she has been doing her thing since the age of 14. I think you might enjoy this conversation a lot.

      1. I’ve listened to her spoken word poem “B” and thought it was absolutely fantastic. She is so moving with her language. I’ll listen to the conversation 🙂
